Plot Summary The movie is set in Montreal during 1995 in the NDG area of the city right after Quebec has set itself up for an independence referendum. The range of political tension serves to the backdrop parallels the psychological tension in the apartment building the story is based around.
There are three principal losely coupled characters who live in a single complex: Victor (Jay Baruchel) – A very friendly and socially awkward elementary school teacher who is overly eager to make friends but struggles with the cold and mysterious demeanor of his neighbors. Affairs Victor is a teacher who recently shifted to Montreal from China. Louise (Emily Hampshire) – A soft-spoken waitress with a passion for cats and an obsession with serial killings news from the city. Spencer (Scott Speedman) – A comically cynical paraplegic man with a dark sense of humor. Adjusting to a wheelchair post-car accident. Spencer’s friends tell him he’s a riot and fills sandwiches with anything but bread. From being excited and welcoming, Victor appears to be overly friendly, but as the movie goes on, we start asking ourselves how innocent he actually is.
Scott Speedman as Spencer
Speedman’s chilling performance turns Spencer into a character that is both charming and creepy. His wit is dark, and his actions are demented, and this keeps the audience in suspense and does not let them trust him.
Emily Hampshire as Louise
Before her breakout role in Schitt’s Creek, Hampshire exhibited her skills in this eccentric and emotionally aloof role. The range with which her character shifts from humorous to disturbing makes her one of the most interesting figures in the film.
Anne-Marie Cadieux as Valérie
Playing a supporting but important role, Valérie is another tenant who picks up that there is something amiss with her neighbors. Her suspicion brings in another element of tension in the film.
